Saint Francis Welcomes Expansion of UConn Emergency Medicine Residency Program

(Hartford, Conn. July 29, 2013) Saint Francis Hospital and Medical Center has partnered with the University of Connecticut School of Medicine to expand UConn’s Integrated Residency Program in Emergency Medicine. The three-year program will expand from 12 to 18 residents per year, starting this month.

The goal is to train more emergency physicians to be capable of working in emergency departments, trauma centers, and a variety of other clinical settings.  The Emergency Medicine residency program is fully accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), and also involves training at Connecticut Children’s Medical Center, Hartford Hospital, and John Dempsey Hospital.

“This is an important opportunity for Saint Francis to expand its role as a teaching hospital,” said C. Steven Wolf, M.D., Chairman for the Department of Emergency Medicine at Saint Francis and Assistant Professor in the Department of Traumatology and Emergency Medicine at the University of Connecticut School of Medicine. “Our goal is to provide an excellent emergency medicine education for future physicians.”

Expansion of the Emergency Medicine residency program to Saint Francis is consistent with an increased interest in emergency medicine. According to the National Residency Matching Program, 1,744 positions were offered in emergency medicine this year, an increase of 76 positions over last year.

At Saint Francis, emergency medicine residents will be exposed to all aspects of the Emergency Department, and will be learning from experienced physicians who will mentor and model best practices.  They will also train in the new Simulation Studio at Saint Francis, which provides a safe environment for learning procedures as well as focusing on communication, teamwork, and workflow.

Saint Francis has a long-established partnership with the UConn School of Medicine, and serves as a major teaching hospital.  The UConn School of Medicine sponsors over 50 Graduate Medical Education programs that rotate through five affiliated hospitals.  In addition, Saint Francis Hospital and Medical Center sponsors its own residency and fellowship programs in Obstetrics & Gynecology, Colon & Rectal Surgery, Podiatric Medicine & Surgery, General Dentistry, Minimally Invasive Surgery, Congestive Heart Failure, and Magnetic Resonance Imaging.
