If you're looking for the absolute latest, state-of-the-art technology in cancer treatment, look no further than the Cancer Center. Our multi-million dollar investment includes two new linear accelerators, a computer-assisted tomography (CAT) simulator, electron beam therapy, radiography, laboratory and high-dose rate brachytherapy (HDR). HDR is a remarkable new radiation technology that accomplishes in just minutes what would previously have taken a three to five day hospital stay. The Cancer Center is the only facility in central Connecticut with HDR technology, which is especially useful in the treatment of gynecological, gastroenterological and pulmonary cancers.
Our prostate cancer program is the most complete in the Hartford region. No where else can you find all of the important treatment arms available in one center: custom immobilization casts for proper patient positioning, 3-D external beam treatment planning computer, 3-D conformal external beam radiation treatment using the area's highest energy linear accelerator and Hartford's first I-125 (seed) brachytherapy implant program.
The radiation oncology staff includes:
- Bruce Kaplan, M.D., director
- Richard C. Shumway, M.D.
- Eric M. Van Rooy, M.D.
- Robin Rice, Ph.D., chief physicist
- Peggy Black, chief therapist
