The Hoffman Breast Health Center is dedicated to the detection and treatment of breast cancer. This Center is a technologically sophisticated facility that's staffed by expert physicians in multiple specialties. Thanks to funding from the Saint Francis Women's Auxiliary, we're the first mammography center in Connecticut to acquire computer aided detection (CAD). This new technology improves breast cancer detection by 20%, including "clinically silent" breast cancers, which were previously almost impossible to see. Our coordinated resources provide patients with timely evaluation, rapid diagnosis and the best options to women and men with breast disease.
Our specialized cancer surgeons provide expert care in the removal of melanomas, sarcomas, breast, gastrointestinal, head and neck cancers, as well as minimally invasive parathyroidectomies. Among our surgical advances is sentinel node mapping for mela-nomas and breast cancers, allowing surgeons to pinpoint the precise location of cancers.
The Saint Francis/Mount Sinai Regional Cancer Center is qualified as a Protocol and Investiga-tional Drug Treatment Center. Patients benefit from full access to national experimental drug therapies without having to leave the local area to receive treatment. Our physicians have pioneered clinical trials in affiliation with national research groups in the field of breast cancer prevention, among others.
The Center is the only facility in central Connecticut with high-dose rate brachy-therapy (HDR) technology, which is especially useful in the treatment of gynecological, gastrointestinal and pulmonary cancers. HDR is a remarkable new radiation procedure that accomplishes in just minutes what previously would have taken a three- to five-day hospital stay. Our prostate cancer treatment program is the most comprehensive in the Hartford region. Services include the area's first I-125 (seed) brachytherapy implant program.
Anticoagulants, or blood thinners, help prevent the formation of harmful blood clots. We established this program ten years ago to provide thorough and coordinated testing, monitoring and management of anticoagulation services to patients at risk of forming blood clots.
To minimize cancer treatment side effects and control pain, our Pain Management Center offers a comprehensive, multidisciplinary approach to alleviating pain and improving quality of life.
