Specialized Services & Support

Specialized Nursing Care

At the core of the Cancer Center is a dedicated staff of nurses, therapists and other caregivers who provide a variety of inpatient and outpatient care, including case management, occupational and physical therapy, support groups, audiology, enterostomal therapy, speech therapy and continuing care. Many of our nurses have specialized training in chemotherapy, emotional support for patients and families, end of life issues and hospice, and other services.

Specialized Support for Patients and Families

The Center offers several programs designed to assist cancer patients and their families in coping with their fears and problems. Support groups offer a safe place to talk, as well as to listen and learn from each other. Educational and wellness resources are also available free of charge through the Hospital's Health Learning Center.

Support Groups at Saint Francis include those for:

  • The Patient and Family
  • Breast Cancer
  • Prostate Cancer
  • Leukemia
  • Bereaved Families

Other services provided:

  • Dietary Counseling
  • Dedicated Oncology Social Workers

Many of our nurses have specialized training in chemotherapy, emotional support for patients and families, end of life issues and hospice, and other services.

"Music as Medicine,"
"Art as Medicine"

The Saint Francis/Mount Sinai Regional Cancer Center's program of music and art therapy is among the most progressive in the nation. We strive to provide an additional dimension to the healing and nurturing environment for patients by infusing the arts into the Hospital, believing that art and music bring the mind, body and spirit together. Through the "Music is Medicine" program, volunteers of all ages perform a variety of music and musical instruments for patients - from full bands to soloists playing quiet, meditative music.

Hospice

In the event a patient's treatment becomes focused on providing comfort rather than cure, the Center offers Hospice care - a program coordinated by an interdisciplinary team of professionals experienced in giving quality, compassionate care at the end of life. Hospice care provides a total support system with emphasis on pain and symptom management, the right to die with dignity, and with the emotional and spiritual support needed by both patients and their family members.

Celebration of Life Day

This is an annual event that honors the growing number of men and women who have triumphed over cancer as patients of the Saint Francis/Mount Sinai Regional Cancer Center. Butterflies are released in a victory garden on the grounds of the Center as a symbol of freedom and metamorphosis.
