(HARTFORD, Conn.) -- Saint Francis Hospital and Medical
Center has been re-verified as a Level I Trauma Center by
the Committee on Trauma of the American College of Surgeons.
Level I status is the highest rating awarded for trauma
centers. As such, it signifies that Saint Francis has the
expertise and equipment to deal with the most serious trauma
Trauma is an injury caused by physical force, such as
motor vehicle crashes, falls, drowning, fire, gunshot,
stabbing or blunt assault. Each year in the United States,
trauma kills more people between the ages of 1 and 44 than
any other disease or illness.
Saint Francis is one of four state-designated Level I
Trauma Centers and a major receiving hospital for LIFE STAR
medical helicopters. As such, it serves as a regional
resource in Connecticut's trauma system.
Founded in 1897, Saint Francis is licensed for 617 acute
inpatient beds and 65 bassinets and is the largest Catholic
hospital in New England.
