Saint Francis Reverified as Level I Trauma Center (May 1, 2000)

(HARTFORD, Conn.) -- Saint Francis Hospital and Medical Center has been re-verified as a Level I Trauma Center by the Committee on Trauma of the American College of Surgeons.

Level I status is the highest rating awarded for trauma centers. As such, it signifies that Saint Francis has the expertise and equipment to deal with the most serious trauma cases.

Trauma is an injury caused by physical force, such as motor vehicle crashes, falls, drowning, fire, gunshot, stabbing or blunt assault. Each year in the United States, trauma kills more people between the ages of 1 and 44 than any other disease or illness.

Saint Francis is one of four state-designated Level I Trauma Centers and a major receiving hospital for LIFE STAR medical helicopters. As such, it serves as a regional resource in Connecticut's trauma system.

Founded in 1897, Saint Francis is licensed for 617 acute inpatient beds and 65 bassinets and is the largest Catholic hospital in New England.
