(HARTFORD, Conn.) – Atique A. Mirza, M.D., of Avon, has joined the Medical and Dental Staff of Saint Francis Hospital and Medical Center.

A specialist in cardiology, Dr. Mirza received his medical degree from Allama Iqbal Medical College, Lahore, Pakistan. He served as an intern at and resident at Rush Presbyterian Saint Luke Roosevelt Medical Center, Grant/Westlake Hospitals, Chicago. After residency training, Dr. Mirza practiced internal medicine, serving as Chief of the Medical Staff and Director of the Intensive Care Unit at Lee County Hospital, Pennington Gap, Va.

Dr. Mirza served as a postdoctoral NIH, noninvasive cardiology and clinical trials fellow at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Harvard Medical School, Boston. He has completed a fellowship in cardiovascular medicine at the University of Connecticut Health Center/Saint Francis Hospital and Medical Center. His areas of interest include primary and secondary risk stratification for coronary artery disease, noninvasive imaging and heart failure.

A diplomate of the American Board of Internal Medicine, Dr. Mirza is board eligible in cardiology and is an associate member of the American College of Cardiology. He currently serves as the President of the Connecticut Chapter of the Association of Physicians of Pakistani Descent in North America.

At Saint Francis, he will practice as a member of Central Connecticut Cardiology, L.L.C., with offices in Hartford, Simsbury and Enfield.

Founded in 1897, Saint Francis is a major teaching hospital licensed for 617 acute inpatient beds and 65 bassinets and is the largest Catholic hospital in New England.
