SAINT FRANCIS RECEIVES $6 MILLION GIFT – - Funds Will Support Orthopedic Programs

(HARTFORD, Conn.) – Just in time for the holidays, Saint Francis Hospital and Medical Center has received its largest-ever private gift, dedicated to support of the Hospital’s orthopedics program, including the recently established Connecticut Joint Replacement Institute (CJRI).

The anticipated value of the gift, the bequest of an estate from an anonymous donor, is placed at $6 million. A separate cash gift of $50,000 was also donated.

“As a lifelong proponent of process improvement engineering, I have long been impressed by the progressive, leading-edge efforts of Saint Francis to improve the quality and efficiency of its delivery of healthcare services. We are pleased to offer our support of the Hospital’s efforts to continue to take healthcare improvements to the next level,” said the donor.

“We are deeply grateful to this donor for this gift of unprecedented generosity,” said Christopher Dadlez, Saint Francis’ President and Chief Executive Officer. “Orthopedics is becoming an increasingly important medical specialty with the aging of the ‘baby boomer’ generation. This gift will support our growing orthopedics program, which includes the Connecticut Joint Replacement Institute.”

A “hospital within a hospital,” CJRI is dedicated to joint replacement surgery. Staffed by 10 fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeons, CJRI maintains dedicated operating rooms, intake, preparation, recovery and post-acute areas. This Institute is expected to perform over 3,000 joint replacement surgeries in its first 12 months of operation.

“Our generous donor has a deep passion for Saint Francis and its exceptional medical staff. This gift represents a profound belief in the work of our doctors, nurses and support staff and the future of orthopedics at Saint Francis,” said Paul Pendergast, President of the Saint Francis Hospital Foundation.

Founded in 1897, Saint Francis is a major teaching hospital licensed for 617 acute inpatient beds and 65 bassinets and is the largest Catholic hospital in New England.
