SAINT FRANCIS RECEIVES PRACTICE GREENHEALTH AWARD - Honored for Creating Healthy, Healing Environment

(HARTFORD, Conn.) --Saint Francis Hospital and Medical Center has been named a recipient of a 2008 Partner for Change Award from Practice Greenhealth. The award honors organizations creating healthy, healing environments committed to eliminating mercury, reducing pollution and recycling waste. Saint Francis was one of 50 organizations from across the country honored with a Partner for Change Award at the CleanMed conference in Pittsburgh on May 20.

“Environmental excellence awards recognize success stories,” said Bob Jarboe, Executive Director of Practice Greenhealth. “Saint Francis received this award for developing successful pollution-prevention programs and has made quality patient care and the environment priorities. As a result, everyone will see long-term benefits. Their actions have led to some dramatic changes.”

David Crowell, the Hospital’s Director of Environmental Services, said that Saint Francis had achieved a 25 percent recycling benchmark by recycling almost 1.3 million pounds of waste, “This was before the start of construction on the new John T. O’Connell Tower. We’ve also recycled another 13,000 tons of material from the demolition of two buildings in connection with this construction project.”

Other statistics provided by Robert Falaguerra, Vice President of Facilities, Support Services and Construction, cited equally impressive recycling results: 532,000 pounds of paper; 516,000 pounds of cardboard; 4,250 gallons of cooking grease; 28,000 pounds of linen; 12,389 florescent light bulbs; and 60,000 pounds of old X-ray equipment.

Some conservation efforts translated into financial savings, noted Falaguerra. “We conserved 889,000 kilowatts of electricity, which saved $114,956, and 9,035 cubic feet of water, which produced savings of $18,070.”

Practice Greenhealth, formerly Hospitals for a Healthy Environment (H2E), is a source of environmental solutions for the healthcare industry. Saint Francis also received a Partner for Change Award from the organization in 2007.

Founded in 1897, Saint Francis is a major teaching hospital licensed for 617 acute inpatient beds and 65 bassinets and is the largest Catholic hospital in New England.
