Saint Francis provides comprehensive care for patients with colon cancer and rectal cancer. This includes surgical care by a team led by surgeons with specialized training in colorectal cancer, expertise which has been recognized by the accreditation of a Saint Francis-based fellowship training program in surgery for colon cancer and rectal cancer. Multidisciplinary treatment planning is standard, and involves consultation with medical oncology and radiation oncology for either preoperative or postoperative treatments to improve outcomes.
For patients with advanced colon cancer or rectal cancer, individualized treatment plans are devised which, in addition to chemotherapy, may include treatment with novel biologic therapies, as well as locoregional therapies directed at specific sites of metastatic disease, such as the liver. We participate in a wide variety of clinical trials sponsored by the National Cancer Institute.
Care for patients and families includes universal molecular screening for risk of hereditary colorectal cancer by genetic counselors, and support from oncology nursing, social work, palliative care, integrative medicine, ostomy care specialists, and rehabilitation services.
