Student Nurses - Internship Program

The Student Nurse Internship Program is an 8-week program designed to provide nursing students entering their senior year with the opportunity for clinical practice in a supportive learning environment. Interns are assigned to a particular clinical unit. They work with a trained RN preceptor. A clinical educator meets with the interns and their preceptors regularly throughout the summer. The educator serves as a clinical mentor and resource for both, the interns and the preceptors. Interns also participate in educational sessions on a variety of clinical issues and professional development topics.

Objectives  

The program will provide students with the opportunity to apply theoretical knowledge to the clinical setting by:  

  • Increasing the ability to function as a member of the multi-disciplinary health care team
  • Enhancing clinical and communication skills
  • Observe clinical area of choice
  • Begin transition from student nurse to a professional nurse

Requirements  

  • Current student, in good standing, in an accredited Nursing Program
  • Successful completion of the medical/surgical rotation
  • Two letters of recommendation from clinical program faculty
  • Official transcript
  • Essay
  • Successful completion of the SFHMC application process
  • Successful completion of orientation and validation of skills required

Opportunities Beyond Internship Program  

  • Per Diem employment during the school year as available based on institutional needs
  • Many student nurse interns transition into graduate nurse residency following graduation and passing NCLEX
