Day Treatment Program

Program Description:

Mount Sinai Rehabilitation Hospital’s Day Treatment Program provides services for people with brain injury and stroke who are able to live at home, but whose daily lives can be improved through organized, intensive outpatient therapy. The focus of the Day Treatment Program is to successfully reintegrate individuals into home, community, and vocational environments. This is achieved through individual therapies as well as specialized groups. Patients also participate in community outings in order to practice and carryover skills they are practicing during therapy sessions in a functional, real life setting.

Admission Criteria:

  • Have a brain injury as a result of trauma, stroke, or other cause
  • Require a minimum of two different therapies, two or more times per week
  • Be medically stable
  • Be independent with self-medication, transfers, and toileting, or have a companion to provide the necessary assistance
  • Not exhibit severe or disruptive anger, or severe anxiety or depression that would interfere with participation in therapy
  • Be able to participate in a group therapy program

Discharge Criteria:

  • All of your goals have been achieved
  • You no longer demonstrate consistent functional gains
  • You no longer require two different therapies, two or more times per week
  • You are not able to comply with the program
  • Your goals and the team’s goals are incompatible

A: The weekly frequency is determined following your initial evaluation. The average frequency is 2-3x/week per discipline.

Q: Will I have the same schedule every week?
A: No, the schedule varies from week to week. Schedules are individually planned weekly by the team in order to tailor treatment activities specific to each individual.

Q: What is the average length of stay?
A: The length of stay varies from person to person depending upon level of impairment, ability to make functional gains, and insurance coverage.

Q: Is therapy covered by insurance?
A: Most insurances cover outpatient therapy. Pre-certification will be completed by the Day Treatment Program.
