The Saint Francis Emergency Department delivers state-of-the-art, compassionate care for the most injured and ill patients as well as those with less serious injuries and ailments.

Over 73,000 patients are cared for each year and 26-27% of those are admitted for extended care.

The facility is designated as a TRAUMA CENTER by the American College of Surgeons and a STROKE CENTER by the Joint Commission for the Accreditation of Hospitals.

Heart attack (STEMI) patients receive advanced cardiac care, and in combination with the Hoffman Heart Institute, the Emergency Department delivers rapid door to balloon (angioplasty) care. In fact, our speed of delivery is among the fastest in the nation (average door to balloon time [DTB] is 67 minutes and we meet Federal targets of less than 90 minutes 97% of the time).

Patients who require it receive advanced imaging such as 64 and 120 slice CT imaging, MRI, ED and radiology ultrasound exams, as well as advanced invasive radiological imaging.

The ED is staffed by Board certified physicians, physician assistants and nurse practitioners. Nurses receive specialty certifications in emergency nursing and trauma care. Additionally, sexual assault victims receive specialized care from SANE certified nurses (Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners).

Saint Francis is one of 2 main sites for resident and student training for the University of Connecticut School of Medicine.

The department also supports an active toxicology program for the treatment of both accidental and intentional poisonings, and runs a clinic for the treatment of medication complications and interactions.

The Emergency Department is located in The John T. O'Connell Tower.
