Medical Oncology Services

The Medical Oncology and Hematology Department is located across the street from the Breast Center in the Saint Francis/ Mount Sinai Regional Cancer Center. A group of dedicated medical oncologists, oncology certified nurses, physicians assistants, pharmacists, a nutritionist and social workers are available to provide you with the best treatment. State-of-the-art chemotherapy administration suites are serviced by an on-site pharmacy. In most cases, women diagnosed with breast cancer can have a same-day consultation with a medical oncologist who has special interest and expertise in breast cancer.

Services Available.

• Preoperative (Neoadjuvant) Chemotherapy
  Women who are interested in breast conserving therapy can have their cancer reduced to a much smaller size prior to removal by surgery. This approach has been proven safe and is a standard method to treat larger breast cancers.
  
  
• Adjuvant Systemic Chemotherapy and Hormonal Therapy
  Women who are at increased risk of breast cancer recurrence are offered chemotherapy and /or hormonal therapy to reduce their risk of recurrence.
  
  
• Metastatic Disease
  The newest treatment options are available to those women with metastatic disease, including biologic therapies chemotherapy, hormonal treatments and bisphosphonate treatments. We also participate in studies of novel agents and treatment approaches.
  
  
• Clinical Protocols and Research
  Our physicians are active participants in the National Cancer Institute sponsored national research Groups, e.g. ECOG, NSABP and GOG. Protocols are available to our patients if needed, Including the STAR trial for prevention of breast cancer.
  
  
• Consultation and "Second Opinion" Services
  If you have been diagnosed with breast cancer, we will be happy to meet with you and review your individual case and the treatment options which have been presented to you and help you decide which treatment options are best for you.

Additional services available on-site include nutrition, pastoral care, social services, dental care, occupational and physical therapy, support groups, audiology, enterostomal therapy, speech therapy and continuing care. Our program of music and art therapy in healing is among the most progressive in the nation.
