During pregnancy, we highly recommend that families who plan to utilize our services for the birthing experience enroll in our prepared childbirth classes (accessed through our toll-free number at 1-877-903-7798). A facet of the prepared childbirth curriculum is the opportunity to tour our Labor/Delivery and Postpartum Units.
The Labor/Delivery Unit itself consists of 14 private Labor/Delivery/Recovery rooms complemented by our "triage" unit. If, upon entry to Labor and Delivery, there is doubt about whether a patient may be in labor or if her so-called "bag of waters" is ruptured, she has an opportunity to be evaluated in our three-bed triage unit. Once the necessity for remaining in the hospital has been established, the family then moves to one of our 14 LDRs. These rooms are spacious and are set up and decorated in a manner to emphasize the "normalcy" of the labor and delivery process and hearkens to the days when women delivered at home. From the bed for the laboring mother to the chairs to accommodate the partner, the emphasis is on comfort. Most labor and delivery is a "routine" process and the medical team provides comfort and reassurance.
Delivery and immediate bonding with the infant all takes place within the LDR. Once mom and baby are stabilized and comfortable in their new circumstances, the family is moved to the Postpartum Unit. The emphasis in the Postpartum Unit is "rooming in" where the parents and the infant can continue the bonding process and embark upon the routine of early life. A newborn nursery is available in the Postpartum Unit for the baby, if the family so requests.
In the immediate postpartum period, the nursing and other support staff ensure that the new parents are comfortable with the basics of parenting and baby care. A lactation consultant is available should any problems be encountered to ensure that the breast-feeding process is underway with success. In most circumstances, a new family is ready to go home in 48 hours and begin the exciting process of growth and development.
