Curtis D. Robinson Men’s Health Institute at Saint Francis Golf Tournament Raises $140,000

Funds will provide free prostate cancer education, screenings and treatment for underinsured 

(Hartford, Conn. August 8, 2014) – The Curtis D. Robinson Men’s Health Institute raised $140,000 at the 5th Annual Celebrity Golf Classic at Tunxis Plantation Country Club in Farmington, Aug. 7. The funds raised will support community outreach efforts to provide free prostate cancer education, screenings, and medical care of uninsured and underinsured men. 

Tournament celebrity players included Honorary Chairman Dr. Benjamin S. Carson, retired neurosurgeon and New York Times best-selling author; actor Clifton Davis, currently starring on Broadway in Aladdin; sports broadcaster Joe D’Ambrosio; University of Hartford Athletic Director, Anton Goff; and Alan Kalter, announcer for the Late Show with David Letterman. A full field of golfers participated in the 18-hole event.  

Lead sponsors of the tournament included: LAZ Parking, The Eric and Jessica Zachs Family Foundation, American Adjustment Bureau, Dr. and Mrs. Benjamin S. Carson, Leo and Irene Charette, Collins Medical, Hartford Steam Boiler and Tribune Media, owners of the Hartford Courant and FoxCT. 

Working with community organizations, the Men’s Health Institute reaches out to underserved community members by hosting educational programs and screenings at churches, mosques and other  institutions to inform men and their families of the risk of prostate cancer. 

The Center’s mission is to address racial disparities in men’s health, particularly in the areas of patient education, early diagnosis and appropriate treatment of men at risk for prostate cancer.
