Saint Francis Listed among Top 100 Hospitals with Great Women’s Health Programs

(Hartford, Conn. December 30, 2014) - Becker’s Hospital Review, a leading source of information for healthcare professionals, has listed Saint Francis Hospital and Medical Center among the top 100 hospitals in the country with “great women’s health programs.”

Explaining its findings, Becker’s noted that, “These hospitals all offer outstanding health services geared toward women, such as gynecology, obstetrics, women-focused heart care and women-focused cancer care, among other women's health needs.”

Hospitals were selected for the list based on clinical accolades and recognition for women's health excellence from various healthcare groups and agencies. Those agencies include U.S. News & World Report, Healthgrades, CareChex and UNICEF's Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative.

“The world-class clinicians and personalized protocols offered in our new women’s center allow us to provide coordinated, compassionate care to women throughout the community,” stated John Rodis, M.D., Executive Vice President, Chief Operating Officer and Chief Physician Executive for Saint Francis. “Recognition from organizations like Becker’s is a tribute to our staff and their dedication to ensuring the highest level of care for the women who use our services.”

Saint Francis was one of three hospitals in Connecticut named to the list, along with Hartford Hospital and Yale-New Haven Hospital.

Last year, Saint Francis Care opened the Comprehensive Women’s Health Center at Saint Francis.  The 24,500 square-foot, $9.1 million facility, provides a comfortable and inviting place for women to receive coordinated specialty care. The Center brings together dedicated services from the Comprehensive Breast Health Center, the Women’s Heart Program, the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and the Center for Integrative Medicine.

The Center also offers the latest imaging technology including 3D breast tomosynthesis imaging, ultrasound elastography, stereotactic image-guided breast biopsies, and bone density scans.  A new 3T MRI scanner with advanced scanning capabilities has been installed in the MRI department adjacent to the new Center.  Radiologists and breast surgeons are on site for breast imaging and minor surgical services. Mammogram results are provided on the same day as the screening.

A certified Genetic Counselor is on-site full-time, providing services to women and families at high risk of hereditary cancers such as breast cancer, ovarian cancer, uterine cancer, and other female hereditary cancer syndromes.

The Center has recently expanded to offer infusion services for women with gynecologic cancer.

The Saint Francis Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology offers leading-edge services to women thanks to specialists in menopause, osteoporosis, and pelvic floor disorders.  The Comprehensive Women’s Health Center is home to a breastfeeding support group, and the lactation department offers outpatient lactation consultation.

The Saint Francis Women’s Heart Program, which in the last seven years has helped over 8,500 women with the tools to make changes in their lives to stay healthy through free education and cardiac risk assessments, provides cardiac evaluation, diagnosis, treatment and exercise programs.

The Integrative Medicine program at the Center provides a holistic approach to care and healing with acupuncture, massage, nutritional consultation, energy therapies, herbal remedies and supplements to helping with pain, anxiety, sleep issues and childbirth.
