From East Hartford to Haiti With Love

(Hartford, Conn. May 5, 2015) - The Saint Francis Hospital and Medical Center International Medical Mission Blue Team will bring obstetrical care to the people of Dame Marie, Haiti, with a gift from Obstetrician and Gynecologist Marco Morel, M.D.

After more than 30 years in practice, Dr. Morel, who also maintains an office in West Hartford, is downsizing and closing his office at 477 Connecticut Boulevard, Suite 119, East Hartford.

Moving Group to Haiti missionThis past weekend, Dr. Morel, his wife Susan, Philip Roland, M.D., Chair of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Saint Francis, Michael Bourque, M.D., Medical Director for the Blue Team, and Jean Francoise, vice president of the container shipping company that will transport the equipment to Haiti, loaded medical equipment valued at more than $75,000 into a truck bound for New Jersey.

The recently purchased medical equipment from the East Hartford office includes exam tables, ultrasound machines, office and kitchen.

“This represents an extraordinary gift for a hospital that doesn't even his its own bedding, or running water,” notes Dr. Bourque. “The electricity is supplied by the generator that the good donors of our mission program purchased several years ago for twenty thousand dollars. (We still contribute to the cost of the gas, so that we might have power when we run the operating room).  Many of these good folks were from Saint Francis Hospital. Now we have a chance to improve the gynecologic and obstetrical care to this fishing village of nine thousand people and the surrounding mountainside of thirty thousand more.”

The shipment is expected to arrive in Dame Marie, Haiti, by the end of July in time for the Blue Team’s next mission in September. The Blue Team has been travelling to Haiti for the past three years and is working to establish the Saint Francis Mission House, a regional health care center.
