Continuity Ambulatory Care

Designed to model private practice

One day each week

Continuity is maintained over four years

Team Management Approach is fully utilized

The Obstetrical and Gynecological Ambulatory Care Center is designed to model closely the private practice of Obstetrics and Gynecology.

Residents are assigned one day each week in the Ambulatory Care Center during which they are free of all other duties. A mixture of new and established obstetrical and gynecological patients is seen during the day. Assignments are deliberately constructed so that the junior and senior residents are present on the same days to enable colleague consultation. The activities of the entire facility are under the direct personal supervision of a full time faculty member.

The entering resident acquires a panel of patients which he/she maintains during the entire four years of training.

The resident practice expands as he/she advances through the program. The resident is required to become proficient in specific office techniques during each subsequent year. His/her mastery of these procedures is evaluated and attested to by the faculty. Private office design, patient processing, accounting principles and office management are included in the curriculum.

While providing a service to the patients attending the facility, the resident is also expected to teach students and residents less senior in the program. Patient education is viewed as an essential part of the practice and, during the residency, the physician in training will find liberal application of the “team management” approach with full utilization of the expertise of nursing, nutrition, social services and continuing care. Subspecialty clinics are conducted apart from the regular schedule and are staffed principally by the senior residents under the supervision of the appropriate faculty members.
