Your shoulders are essential to performing many routine everyday activities.

The shoulder is the most flexible joint in the body, made up of the upper arm bone (humerus), the shoulder blade (scapula), and the collarbone (clavicle).  It’s a ball-and-socket joint—the ball of the upper arm bone fits into a shallow socket (glenoid) in the shoulder blade.  The shoulder joint allows the arm to rotate in front, behind, to either side, and above the body.

The joint surfaces where these three bones touch are covered with articular cartilage, a smooth substance that cushions the bones and enables them to move easily. All remaining surfaces of the shoulder are covered by a thin, smooth tissue liner called the synovial membrane. This membrane releases a special fluid that lubricates the cartilage, reducing friction in a healthy shoulder.

Stability and support are provided by the muscles and tendons that surround the shoulder.

Disease or injury can disrupt this free-flowing movement, resulting in pain, muscle weakness, and restricted function. If the shoulder is severely damaged by arthritis or injury, it may be difficult to perform simple activities such as reaching, gardening, or lifting.

Does shoulder pain keep you from enjoying
normal activities?

Arthritis causes pain in hips and knees

Shoulder pain due to arthritis or injury can make normal everyday activities painful and difficult.

Medications and/or changes to everyday activities may be helpful.

If these measures are ineffective in relieving your pain, ask your doctor about shoulder replacement surgery, or call the Connecticut Joint Replacement Institute at 1-866-501-CJRI (2574).

Shoulder replacement surgery can relieve shoulder pain, increase motion, and help restore the enjoyment of your favorite everyday activities.
