Diagnosis and Treatment

The Hoffman Heart and Vascular Institute uses state-of-the-art techniques and procedures for the most accurate diagnosis and the most effective treatment possible.

Patients with suspected cardiovascular conditions work with their cardiologist to determine appropriate testing for determining weakness in the heart or vessels. Our multidisciplinary approach and highly trained physicians, nurses and technicians ensure the highest quality of care.

Interventional Cardiology

Interventional cardiology uses catheter-based treatments for patients with diseases of the heart vessels or of the coronary arteries. If a blockage is found in an artery, the interventional cardiologist may clear the clots from the clogged coronary arteries, and, when necessary, may insert balloons and/or stents into the artery to restore blood flow.

Interventional Radiology

Interventional Radiology is a fully integrated element of the vascular program at Hoffman Heart. Our group of experienced radiologists works alongside cardiologists to provide comprehensive care to diagnose and treat conditions of the peripheral vascular system outside the brain and the heart. The beauty of many of these tests and treatments is that they are minimally invasive, meaning that many serious heart conditions can be diagnosed and corrected without major surgery.

An electrophysiology study (also known as an EP test) is a special study of the heart’s conduction system to ensure that the heart's electrical system is functioning properly and that there is no abnormality, which may be causing a rapid heartbeat. In some patients who have experienced heart attacks, this test may help to assess whether or not an implantable defibrillator may be needed to prevent death from cardiac arrest.

The Hoffman Heart and Vascular Institute performs more open-heart surgeries than any other cardiac program in Connecticut. Many procedures can also be performed with minimally invasive techniques, allowing for less pain, fewer complications and a quicker recovery.
