Inpatient Integrative Medicine

Gentle Attention While You Heal

As you spend time in our hospital, our specially trained Integrative Medicine practitioners are available to provide compassionate care while you heal.

  • Practitioners provide free, 15 to 20 minute sessions giving you quiet attention to relax, reduce pain and help heal faster.
  • Simply call us in advance of your hospital visit or ask your nurse to request an appointment.
  • Services include:

Acupuncture

Thread-like needles placed at specific sites may provide drug-free pain relief, reduce side effects from medications or treatments and help balance the body's energy for relaxation and peace.

Accupressure

Ear seeds are sometimes used instead of needles. Placed at strategic points on the ear, these small seeds are stuck on like Band-Aids to produce relief.

Energy Therapy

Energy therapy is a gentle, relaxation technique that can help patients feel calmer and more comfortable. A gentle, non-invasive technique, energy therapy may provide pain relief, allow patients to rest easier, restore energy levels and help stimulate the body's natural healing abilities. Practitioners put their hands either on or over areas of the body and help to balance the body's energy.

Manual Lymph Drainage

This technique uses rhythmic stokes to decrease edema (swelling) and prevent or reduce the effects of lymphedema. This approach is commonly used after surgery - especially breast surgery.

Meditation and Relaxation Techniques

Meditation is a state of focused awareness and inner peace that brings about mental, physical and spiritual benefits. Meditation has been shown to reverse the body's "fight or flight" response to stress and invoke deep relaxation. Practitioners can help introduce this concept to patients through breathwork, mindfulness, deep listening and guided imagery.

Pet Therapy

Studies have shown that pets can lower an individual's heart rate and blood pressure and be a positive distraction from whatever ails you.

Reflexology

The hands and feet are regarded as mirrors of the body. By applying a controlled amount of pressure to specific points on the feet or hands (reflex areas), the therapist can identify and treat problems in all parts of the body.

Soft Touch Hand Massage

Hands have thousands of nerve endings and many fine-tuned muscles and sensory receptors. Soft touch hand massage is meant to be very gentle and comforting to the recipient.

Therapeutic Massage

Massage therapy is the manipulation of soft muscle tissue that enhances the function of joints and muscles, improves circulation and relieves physical stress and fatigue. It can also help reduce stress levels, improve relaxation, relieve chronic pain, increase blood flow and stimulate endorphins (the body's natural painkillers).

Healing Arts

HealingArts

The Center for Integrative Medicine opened its first rotating art gallery in 2009, bringing the beauty and inspiration of art to the patients, staff, and friends of Saint Francis Hospital and Medical Center. Healing arts have a way of evoking an array of feelings – happiness, sadness, peacefulness – which can help individuals express themselves throughout the healing journey. Visit us to experience art for your own healing!
