June 2012 -- Mount Sinai Rehabilitation Hospital, in collaboration with the National Spinal Cord Injury Association, kicked off the "Powerful Tools for Caregivers" program. The nationally recognized program offers caregivers a range of self-care tools designed to help them communicate more effectively in the healthcare environment with both family members and patients. This educational program also supports caregivers in making tough care giving decisions such as nursing home placements, driving issues, or finances. The classes are lead by Matthew Farr, MS,PT, Michelle Russi, PTA, CBIS, Karen Prior-Topalis, RN,BSN,MBA,CCM and Tara Rothstein, OTR/L,MSW,CBIS.
Participating caregivers create independent action plans and as part of the group, practice new techniques, try out communication strategies and learn practical tips.
