Mount Sinai Rehabilitation Hospital expands its services to the Mandell Jewish Community Center in West Hartford.

Facilities include physical therapy offices and a rehabilitation gym.

2008 - 2009

Mount Sinai Rehabilitation Hospital continues to develop innovative programs, and build on past successful initiatives. Outcomes consistently remain superior to regional and national peer comparisons. The Mandell MS Center enhances its services to include a complete functional evaluation for each new patient. The spectrum of research activities is broadened, positioning Mount Sinai as an increasingly important contributor of comprehensive MS care.

Leading-edge therapeutic technologies, such as the Ankle-bot and GAITRite mat, are added to Mount Sinai’s program to assist both research and clinical teams with patients. The Wii Fit® system proves to be an effective rehabilitation tool, with fitness video games requiring patients to perform lower-body balance and weight-shifting activities: valuable adjuncts to weight-bearing rehabilitation after injury or surgery.

Staff of The Center for Rehabilitation and Sports Medicine, an integral part of the Mount Sinai outpatient services team, receive the Outcomes Excellence Award, presented by Focus on Therapeutic Outcomes, Inc. (F.O.T.O.) of Knoxville, Tennessee, for exceeding the national average for functional change in F.O.T.O.’s database for four consecutive quarters. In addition, the customer satisfaction rating for the year 2010 is 97.49%.

New therapeutic technologies added to Mount Sinai programs include LiteGait, a gait training device used for patients with a wide range of impairments and functional levels. Therapists also begin using the Bioness Electrical Stimulation Device, which helps them and their patients to retrain lower leg muscles, increase motion and blood circulation, and enable the return to a more normal step.

Mount Sinai enhances innovative community programs of rehabilitation with the Solorider Golf Cart, an adaptive cart that allows handicapped golfers to continue playing the game they love while seated in a specialized lift chair.

Mount Sinai also acquires a new launch boat for the Connecticut Adaptive Rowing Program, allowing coaches to communicate with rowers for added rehabilitative value and safety.

The 20th anniversary celebration of the year merger discussions between Mount Sinai and Saint Francis began includes the unveiling of a plaque in the Mount Sinai board room.
