Bringing Home Baby

Parents sometimes wish their newborn came with an owner's manual. While we can't offer you a sure-fire instruction book, we do offer a wide variety of educational programs to ensure that moms, dads, and siblings feel well-prepared to bring their new baby home. 

The following classes and workshops are designed to make the childbirth experience more meaningful and positive, and to smooth the transition after the baby is born.  

Public Maternity Tour

A tour of New Beginnings Family Birth Care is held on selected Sunday afternoons and Monday evenings. The tour begins at the Information Desk on the 2nd floor of the Patient Care Tower, and lasts approximately 1 hour. Class size is limited; please register early. Registration for each participant is required. Fee: free

Classic Beginnings

This 3-week class is based in the traditional prepared childbirth model. Topics include an overview of labor & delivery, preterm labor, relaxation and comfort measures, breathing techniques, medical interventions during labor, induction of labor and c-section, and the postpartum period. Class meets on 3 consecutive Tuesday evenings for approximately 2 1/2 hours each evening. Tuition includes access to the online course. This class does not include a tour. Class size is limited, so please register early. Tuition: $100/couple.

Mini Beginnings

Designed with the busy mother-to-be in mind, this one-night mini-class provides a concise overview of labor and delivery, comfort measures including breathing techniques, and pain control options. This class does not include a tour. Tuition includes access to the online course. Class lasts approximately 3 hours. Class size is limited, so please register early. Tuition: $50/couple.

eBeginnings

Have you ever wished you could take a Prepared Childbirth class in the comfort of your own home? For the mother who cannot attend our on site Prepared Childbirth classes, we offer Childbirth classes via the web. “If a picture is worth a thousand words, a video must be worth a million” is the philosophy behind this web-enhanced guide. See What You Read - Childbirth is a comprehensive book that accompanies the website SeeWhatYouRead.com. You will receive a PIN number to allow access to a website where you will find more than 50 video clips that show real-life examples of the subjects you're reading about. Learn breathing and relaxation techniques, helpful labor positions, see animation of the stages of labor, find infant care topics, and much more.

NOTE: you must have Flash Player and Adobe Reader installed on your computer. Tuition fee: $25.

Weekend Beginnings

This weekend class includes the same topics as the three-week series, but condensed into a one-day format. Class meets from 9am until approximately 4 pm. We do not provide food and recommend that you bring snacks. You may purchase lunch in the Hospital cafeteria or sandwich shop.  Tuition includes access to the online course. This class does not include a tour. Class size is limited, please register early. Tuition: $100/couple. 

Breastfeeding Beginnings

This one-night class covers topics such as the benefits of breastfeeding, the first few hours, positioning and latching, avoiding common problems, and how to know if your baby is 'getting enough.' Class duration is approximately 2 ½ hours, and partners are strongly encouraged to attend. Tuition fee: FREE.

Breastfeeding Mothers group

This informal group meets weekly to discuss topics related to breastfeeding and child care, and to provide support and encouragement for mothers and their breastfeeding babies. Facilitated by a board certified lactation consultant. Fee: FREE

Sibling Class

This class is designed to ease the transition from being the 'one and only' to being the big brother or big sister. Children are given a tour of the New Beginnings Family Birth Care unit where they will see a newborn baby, the room where their mother may stay, and practice diapering and holding a baby. This class is designed for children ages three to eight. Class duration is approx 1 1/4 hour. Tuition: $20 per family.

First-time mothers are invited to participate in "BirthCareConnect," our program that provides learning opportunities and other benefits designed especially for this important and exciting time. Created to guide women through pregnancy and delivery, this program includes expert advice, education, and helpful support services.
