(HARTFORD, Conn.) – The Comprehensive Breast Health Center at Saint Francis Hospital and Medical Center has received a $50,000 grant from the Charlotte Johnson Hollfelder Foundation. The funds will support renovations of the Center designed to improve access to state-of-the-art digital mammography and clinical care.

Located at 95 Woodland St., Hartford, the Center provides rapid diagnosis and timely evaluation of breast diseases. Staffed by breast cancer surgeons, radiologists and medical pathologists, the Center offers same-day treatment plans for patients diagnosed with breast cancer.

This is the fourth grant that the Center has received from Fred Hollfelder and the Charlotte Johnson Hollfelder Foundation. Previous grants have supported the hiring of a social worker to assist patients in coping with a diagnosis of breast cancer, free mammograms for women who otherwise could not afford them, and assistance to breast cancer patients with unexpected medical and/or household expenses.

“We are deeply grateful to the Charlotte Johnson Hollfelder Foundation for their continued generous support of the Comprehensive Breast Health Center. This latest grant allows us to renovate our facilities so that we may provide not only prompter access for mammography, but offer more available mammography as well,” said Kristen Zarfos, M.D., Medical Director. “New spaces will offer more exam and consultation rooms for quicker access to appointments, individualized care, and privacy.”

The Charlotte Johnson Hollfelder Foundation was established by Fred Hollfelder in memory of his late wife, Charlotte, who was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1993 and died of an unrelated illness two years later.

“Grants like these profoundly affect our delivery of care for our patients. Mr. Hollfelder’s continued generosity for our programs is making a real difference in our community,” said Paul Pendergast, President, the Saint Francis Foundation.

Founded in 1897, Saint Francis is a major teaching hospital licensed for 617 acute inpatient beds and 65 bassinets. It is the largest Catholic hospital in New England.
