Physician Sketch:
Jonathan Reed Sporn, M.D., a graduate of SUNY Upstate Medical Center, served as an Intern and Resident in Internal Medicine at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center in Worcester, Massachusetts. He completed his Fellowship Training in Hematology and Oncology at the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center, Hanover, New Hampshire in 1986. After several years as a practicing Oncologist in Bangor, Maine he joined the University of Connecticut Health Center as an Assistant Professor in Clinical Oncology and rose to the rank of Professor. During his 15 years on the full-time staff at the University of Connecticut Health Center, he was the Director of the Hematology-Oncology Fellowship Program from 1991- 1997, and the Lead Oncologist for the Multidisciplinary Program in Melanoma and the Multidisciplinary Program in Breast Cancer. His clinical research activities have included National Cancer Institute sponsored cooperative group trials, investigator-initiated trials of tumor vaccines and other approaches to immunotherapy, and trials of novel therapeutic agents developed by the pharmaceutical industry. In September 2002, he joined the Saint Francis/Mount Sinai Regional Cancer Center as an Attending Physician. Dr. Sporn is the Lead Oncologist for the GI Cancer Program of Excellence, the Director of the Immunotherapy Program, and the Director of Cancer Clinical Trials Office. In 1983 he received the George Sheehan award from the American Cancer Society Hartford Chapter for Excellence in Patient Care. In 2005, for the third time, he was selected as one of Connecticut’s “Top Doctors” by “Best Doctors in America”. He holds an appointment as a Professor of Clinical Medicine at the University of Connecticut School of Medicine. |
